Recycling plastics made possible with Calprene
Recycling plastics made possible with Calprene from Dynasol (SBS and SEBS)
23rd February 2022
Dynasol have developed bespoke solutions to improve the performance properties of different types of recycled plastics such as polypropylene, polystyrene and polyethylene
The growing importance to find more sustainable solutions and support a circular economy is the largest driving force behind the increased consumption of recycled plastics today. The lack of biodegradability and growing concerns over the accumulation of plastic particles in nature have driven the demand for recycled plastics higher than ever.
Plastics collected from post-industrial processes such as automotive, electronics etc. are generally of high quality and purity whereas post-consumer plastics, like plastic bottles and plastic trays are found to have low quality and mixed polymer types. These inconsistencies in feedstock in addition to reduction of properties as a result of reprocessing pose a challenge for producing high quality recycled plastics.
How can we improve performance properties of reprocessed plastics?
Dynasol have conducted studies into the use of Calprene SBS (styrene butadiene styrene) and SEBS (styrene ethylene butylene styrene) as performance improvement additives for plastic reprocessing. They found, in the recycled plastics, vastly improved mechanical properties such as impact resistance, improved processability and decreased melt flow index. Other properties such as stress-cracking resistance and ageing resistance can also be improved by using these Calprene products. Your business becoming more sustainable has a range of benefits:
Your brand is protected – reputation is vital to your prospective customers and clients. Ensuring sustainable practices means you’ll be seen by your customers as environmentally-conscious.
Investment opportunities – businesses are always looking to work with companies who prioritise sustainability as part of their business practice.
Future legislation – becoming more sustainable and reducing your carbon footprint now means that your business will be prepared for future legislation and far ahead of the competition.
Plastic type and product recommendations
The below plastic types outline which Dynasol SBS and SEBS products can be incorporated into plastics recycling to improve various properties including impact resistance and elasticity
-
Polystyrene (PS)
Calprene 700 (SBS) – benefits include improved impact resistance at room and low temperature, elasticity, melt flow Index. As little as 3% addition of Calprene 700 vastly improves impact resistance at room temperature and extreme low temperatures
-
Polypropylene (PP) / PP mixed with Polyethylene (PE)
Calprene H6180X (SEBS) – benefits include improved impact resistance at room and low temperature, elasticity, no impact on melt flow index, resistance to the ageing test (300h/150°C). As little as 1% addition of Calprene H6180X provides good results
-
High density polyethylene (HDPE)/ HDPE mixed with PP
Calprene H6180X (SEBS), Calprene 6215SX (SEBS) or Calprene 718 (SBS) – benefits include improved impact resistance at room and low temperature, elasticity, no impact on melt flow index, improved stress cracking resistance
-
Low density Polyethylene (LDPE)
Calprene H6180 (SEBS), Calprene 718 (SBS) – benefits include improved elongation and tension set. As little as 3% addition of Calprene vastly improves tension set making it suitable for elastic applications. The agricultural sector generate thousands of tons of LDPE residue each year making it crucial to find a way to reprocess this residual material
-
Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)
Calprene H6110 (SEBS) – benefits include improved impact resistance at room and low temperature, elasticity, melt flow Index. ABS is one of the most used polymers in the automotive sector, addition levels of inly 5% Calprene H6110 improves impact resistance of recycled material by 73%
